5 Gorgeous Lakes to Visit Around the World
When it comes to planning vacations, the sea gets all the glory. But staying at a lake can also be a magical experience. For your consideration, here are 5 incredible lakes from around the world, all of which are definitely worth visiting.
Lake Como
While it’s not the largest lake in Italy, Lake Como has the most celebrity cachet. Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Branson and others all have luxurious villas along Lake Como’s shore. Aside from celebrity-watching, activities include sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Poet Percy Bysshe Shellley once wrote that the lake “exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty.”
Lake Baikal
If you’re hardy and persistent enough to make the trek out to Siberia, you can see the world’s oldest and deepest lake, Lake Baikal. The lake is so large that it is home to many species found nowhere else on earth, including the Lake Baikal seal or nerpa. There are a variety of resorts along the lake shore, and activities include boating, snorkeling, scuba diving and hiking in the surrounding wilderness.
Lake Nakuru
Located in central Kenya, Lake Nakuru is famous for the pink flamingos that congregate there in numbers ranging from the thousands to the millions. This incredible display is complemented by the large numbers of other African wildlife in the surrounding park, including rhinos, giraffes, lions, cheetahs and leopards.
Lake Atitlan
Located in Guatemala’s Mayan highlands, Lake Atitlan is an enormous volcanic lake formed from an old crater and surrounded by three active volcanoes. Snorkeling, kayaking, boating and hiking are all possibilities, and don’t forget to make time to visit some of the indigenous Mayan villages.
Lake Matheson
Lake Matheson in New Zealand is also known as Mirror Lake, and if you visit just after dawn, you’ll see why: the flawless, picture-perfect reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman are absolutely breathtaking!
To visit any of these lakes, you’ll need a valid passport. Passport processing time takes about 6 weeks for regular processing and about 3 weeks for the Department of State’s expedited processing, so make sure you give yourself enough time. If you do need faster service, you can get your passport more quickly either by making an appointment to visit one of the 24 regional passport agency offices servicing the US or use a private expediter like RushMyPassport.

Writing in Pictures $16.03 Unlike most how-to books on screenwriting, Writing in Pictures is highly practical, offering a realistic guide to the screenwriting profession, as well as concrete practical guidance in the steps professional writers take to write a screenplay that comes from the heart instead of the pocketbook. The readeris taken through the nitty-gritty process of conceiving, outlining, constructing, and writing a screenplay in the professional format, with clear and concise examples offered for every step in writing a short dramatic film. Writing in Pictures offers straight talk, no mumbo-jumbo or gimmicks, just a methodical, step-by-step process that walks the reader through the different stages of writing a screenplay — from idea to outline to character biography to treatment to step outline to finished screenplay. Using well-known films and screenplays, both contemporary and classic, to illustrate its lessons, Writing in Pictures also offers comments from famous screenwriters past and present and insightful stories (often colorful and funny) that illuminate aspects of the craft. |

Private Pictures $75 Snapshots taken by American soldiers of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, humiliated and tortured shocked the world in 2004 and more have followed from the conflict in Afghanistan, but whether the public have been horrified by the soldiers' conduct or the fact they have taken pictures has not been clear. In fact, as this remarkable book reveals and relates, soldiers have taken photographs of war and its atrocities for more than 100 years. But their pictures are private, intended mainly for the soldiers themselves, as mementoes or as attempts to make sense of the chaos, brutality and boredom of war. They can be gruesome or sociable, shocking or mundane and they are seldom regarded as serious contributions to a visual culture of war, which since 1939 has been dominated by professional war photography. But with the 21st-century shift to simple digital photography, transmission by the internet available to all, and a new 'citizen journalism', soldiers' pictures are acquiring a new resonance."Private Pictures" traces this unacknowledged genre of photography from the origins of popular photography in the Boer War through to the present day; it discusses how the images have been used and it asks: what effect might the wider appreciation of soldiers' pictures have on the popular perception of war? |

Funny Pictures $26.95 This collection of essays explores the link between comedy and animation in studio-era cartoons, from filmdom’s earliest days through the twentieth century. Written by a who’s who of animation authorities, Funny Pictures offers a stimulating range of views on why animation became associated with comedy so early and so indelibly, and illustrates how animation and humor came together at a pivotal stage in the development of the motion picture industry. To examine some of the central assumptions about comedy and cartoons and to explore the key factors that promoted their fusion, the book analyzes many of the key filmic texts from the studio years that exemplify animated comedy. Funny Pictures also looks ahead to show how this vital American entertainment tradition still thrives today in works ranging from The Simpsons to the output of Pixar. |

Pictures of Us $4.95 The photographs lining the mantel of the Butterfield home tell their story. From shots of Michael and Tess as high school sweethearts to images of their daughter’s wedding they look like the perfect family. But behind the pictures is a different tale that doesn’t quite fit the love-at-first-sight, happily-ever-after version of Tess and Michael’s marriage. And it’s a tale that’s revealed by a shocking phone call out of the blue. With that one call the fabric of their life together shifts, and everything they believe is challenged. Are they the perfect family? Or is that a facade as thin as the photos themselves? |

Fight Pictures $65 The first filmed prizefight, Veriscope’s Corbett-Fitzsimmons Fight (1897) became one of cinema’s first major attractions, ushering in an era in which hugely successful boxing films helped transform a stigmatized sport into legitimate entertainment. Exploring a significant and fascinating period in the development of modern sports and media, Fight Pictures is the first work to chronicle the mostly forgotten story of how legitimate bouts, fake fights, comic sparring matches, and more came to silent-era screens and became part of American popular culture. |

Pictures of Fidelman $6.99 This is the story in art of the painter Arthur Fidelman, born in the Bronx and spending years of his life in Italy–Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice–pursuing his tumultuous career through adventure and misadventure.  What perhaps saved him from disaster (Fidelman is a comic hero whose every next step is a trap sprung by bad luck as though his luck were good) is that he kept his finger in art, perhaps without knowing it seeking “perfection of the life” as well as the work.  Six pictures of Fidelman comprise an exhibition. |
